Getting your child involved in arts and crafts is the best way to develop their creativity. Easy to shape, playdough is excellent for kids of all age and they can have a lot of fun fashioning different objects. But sometimes kids have a little trouble deciding on what object to make.
They get bored of the same old rectangular and spherical shapes and they look for more creative objects to make. And although they might even come up with some idea of a particular object that they would like to make, they do not know how to go about it. To help you in such a situation, we have come up with some cool playdough ideas for kids.
For making these objects, you need some simple supplies besides the playdough. Feel free to modify the crafts to suit your kid's imagination. You can use additional supplies like small buttons, glitter powder, pebbles and feathers to make the craft objects more interesting. You can even make your own recipe. Here are a few creative playdough ideas for kids.

Cool Playdough Ideas

Smiling Earthworm

This particular playdough creation is sure to be a hit among kids. It is surprisingly easy to model and as kids love all things creepy crawly, they are sure to love making it.
Things required:
  • Box of bake-able playdough
  • Aluminum foil
  • Toothpick
To make this smiling earthworm, take a small ball of playdough in your hand. A tennis ball sized amount of playdough is sufficient for making a single earthworm. Roll the dough in your hand until it is soft and pliable. Now place it on the worktable and roll it with your palm, against the surface of the worktable.
You should be having a thick rope like coil of playdough. Now shape the coil into the form of an earthworm, by making the coil a little curvy. One end of the coil should be a little thick and rounded and other end should be pointy. The rounded end will be the head of the earthworm and the pointy end the tail.
Now take a toothpick and poke eyes and a smiling mouth on the face of the earthworm. Place this creation on a baking tray lined with aluminum foil and bake it at 275º C oven for 25-30 minutes. Cool the smiling earthworm on the wire rack before displaying it.

Playdough Flowers

There is nothing more beautiful than making some lovely flowers in different colors with playdough. These can be placed inside a small vase, where the kids can admire their handiwork.
Things required:
  • Box of playdough (pink and blue colors)
  • Wrapping paper
  • Toothpick
  • Craft knife
You can make multicolored flowers by using different colored playdough. For this project we are using blue and pink colored playdough. Take a small golf ball sized amount of pink playdough in your hands and roll it to form a smooth ball. Divide this small ball into four equal parts and shape them into flat discs on the palm of your hand.
Shape it into a teardrop form, pinching it on top to make a petal. Make petals with the rest of the round discs that you have made. Now roll a toothpick at the base of one of the flower petal. Make sure that the playdough petal adheres to the toothpick. Adhere the three other petals in a similar way.
Cut out a small strip of wrapping paper with the help of scissors and wrap it around the toothpick. Apply a spot of glue on the base of the toothpick and attach the end of the wrapping paper over it. Let the playdough flower dry completely for 24 hours so that it hardens. Make blue colored paydough flowers in the same way and arrange in a small vase.

Heart Pendant

This one is for little girls who would like nothing better than wearing their playdough creation. Heart pendants are very easy to make and you need very less supplies.
Things required:
  • Pink playdough
  • Craft knife
  • Toothpick
  • Flexible wire
To make the heart pendant, first you need to roll a small amount of playdough into a ball shape and flatten it out gently. Make sure that the playdough is about ¼ inch in thickness. Now take a coin sized amount of playdough, roll it out into a coil shape and loop it around the circular playdough to form a heart shape.
Use the craft knife if necessary to give it the right shape. Make a small hole with a toothpick on the upper right hand corner of the heart. Bake the playdough in a 275º C oven for 20-25 minutes and allow it to cool. Once cool, insert a piece of flexible wire through it. Twist the two ends of the wire together to create a small loop. Heart pendant is ready.
You can help your kids to make these playdough crafts but don't take over their projects. Remember that it is their craft and they need to do it themselves from start to finish, so that they can feel the joy of making something with their own hands.
